The pen and ink drawings of the portraits of birds and native Americans demonstrate Cano’s facility with stippling and cross hatching. They are unique in that they are without color.
The native American drawings are portraits but not of anyone particular. They are a type. While they are devoid of a name, or singular identity, they still have personality and unique characteristics.
The birds are based on the creatures who visit his backyard.
As the viewer can tell, Cano spends a lot of time observing. His ideas and techniques percolate for a while so that comes to the blank canvas ready to detail his observations. Apparently none of his backyard visitors escape his keen eye.
His work exemplifies the definition of Transformation of Materials with an Autobiography thrown in.
