About the Artist

A picture of Connor Everts

Connor Everts, was perhaps the quintessential California artist.

Connor Everts Artist Compleat - YouTube Video

If you studied art in Southern California at a certain time, it was likely he was one of your teachers. One of your more influential teachers.

His production was prolific. His working career spanned over forty years. He was interested in prints and multiples. His work clearly can be defined by the intersectionality of the decades in which he worked. The pop idiom of the sixties, the muscular, intellectualism and material of the minimalists of the seventies, the rehabilitation of painting in the eighties, and the conceptualism and beauty of the nineties.

He gained some notoriety in the sixties, through no fault of his own when a work of his that was exhibited was deemed pornographic and he was removed from the exhibition, as well as his teaching job. It was a drawing of an adult in its mother’s womb not wanting to be born into a corrupt world; one in which a popular president could be assassinated.

A longshoreman at night, a painter by day, he was truly obsessed with art. And Art Rep-DG currently has access to literally thousands of prints, paintings and drawings from his illustrious career.

He founded the Los Angeles Printmakers Society. He valued craft throughout his career and was always interested is defying the reach of “cultural enforcers’ -the police, and district attorneys. He described himself as a bon vivant.  And he was something out of a Damon Runyan story- a larger than life character, always with a twinkle in his eye, being in on the joke and committed to making art and expression.  If one were to invent an artist, it would be Connor Everts.

With a sense that meaning, and material could be transformative for the viewer, the raconteur personality in the gallery was at odds with the seriousness and aim of what hung on the walls. It is safe to say, there weren’t many artists around like Everts. To be able to bring his work back to life is a thrill. It cements his reputation as the iconic California artist, and offers a tremendous opportunity to collect the work of a master.

In a moment  where there are so many artists and choices, it is good to be able to look at the entirety of an influential artist’s career, connect the dots, and easily see his place in history.

On that point, before social media, websites and digital moments, there were artists laboring away in their studios, imparting their knowledge, their passion, and their work to a select audience. We hope to introduce Connor Everts ‘work to a brand-new generation.
