Jim Kazanjian studied photography and received an MFA from Art Center College of Design.
He digitally manipulates composite images built from photographs he finds online and from the Library of Congress. He feeds these images through Photoshop. He then uses a layering process of adding and subtracting -sometimes up to fifty elements to produce a single image. At no time does he use a camera at any stage in the process.
These are random, improvised images based on what is available to him at the time. The final image is many times removed from the original photograph.
He gets his inspiration from classic horror literature of H.P. Lovecraft and Algernon Blackwood. And indeed, there are images that conjure up the supernatural. He can transform the commonplace into something sinister and foreboding. The mundane meets weird and the familiar seems alien.
For Jim, it is a way to render the sublime. I believe that is what he is looking for. But I also believe that he is somewhat of a stand-up comedian. The work, while macabre in some instances, is also funny. And the offered image acts like the punch line that he has so carefully crafted.
I am very happy to represent Jim here at: ArtRep-DG.com
